another + singular noun (Kata Benda tunggal)
other + plural noun (Kata Benda jamak)
others (a pronoun to replace other + plural noun):  kata ganti untuk menggantikan other + plural noun

1. I want another chair. (chair is singular so we use another)
2. I need other chairs. (chair is plural so we use other)
3. I need others. (refers to other chairs)

Kapan Kita Harus Menggunakan Another?

Another berarti: satu lagi, sebuah tambahan, tambahan satu yang berbeda, dan satu alternative.

Another adalah determiner (kta penujuk) (dan kata petunjuk angka) yang diikuti kata benda tunggal yang dapat dihitung atau kata ganti benda / orang. Beberapa penggunaan “Another” dijabarkan secara rinci dan diikuti dengan contoh pada pembahasan di bawah ini.

1. Another + Singular Countable noun

Another dapat diikuti oleh kata benda tunggal yang dapat dihitung (singular countable noun)

1. Amrul has just rented another car.
2. Would you like another cup of tea?
3. Don’t worry about the weather. We can go another day.
4. I think it is better for you to choose another shirt.
5. We are going to have another baby.

2. Another + One

Another dapat ditempatkan sebelum kata "one" ketika maknanya sudah dijelaskan pada teks sebelumnya.

1. Diana has recently drunk two cups of coffee though now she wants another one. (= an additional coffee)
2. A: You may borrow more of these novels if you like.
3. B: Ok, I’ll choose another one. (= another novel, one more novel)

3. Another as a pronoun

Terkadang another digunakan sebagai kata ganti

1. That piece of blackforest cake was delicious. I think I’ll have another. (another = one more piece of blackforest cake)
2. I dislike this bag. Let’s ask for another. (another = another bag)
3. Note: you can also say: “I think I’ll have another one.” and “Let’s ask for another one.”

4. Another + number + plural noun

Another dapat diikuti kata benda jamak ketika ada “keterangan jumlah” sebelum kata benda atau sebelum frase kata benda tertentu seperti couple of, few etc. dll)

1. In another 10 years my handphone is going to be decrepit.
2. I like this town so much that I’m going to spend another four days here.
3. Our school requires another two math teachers before semester begins.
4. Rudy was given another couple of months to finish the paper.

Yang perlu diingat dalam hal ini adalah “another” merupakan satu kata dan tidak ditulis terpisah seperti an other.

Kapan Kita Harus Menggunakan Other / Others?

Other diikuti kata benda jamak yang dapat dihitung (Plural Countable Noun), kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung (Uncountable Noun), atau kata ganti (Pronoun)).

1. Other + Plural Countable Noun

Other dapat diikuti oleh kata benda jamak yang dapat dihitung.

1. Our shop has other styles if you are interested.
2. Have you got any other gowns, or are these the only ones?
3. Some last days were sunny though other days could be very rainy.
4. Dinda has invited some other her friends to come.
5. I wish i could help you, yet I’m busy with other things

2. Other + Sigular Uncountable Noun

Other dapat diikuti oleh kata yang tidak dapat dihitung.

1. Some music calms people. Other music causes negative effect.
2. The exisiting information is confusing. Everyone needs other information.

3. Other + Ones

Other dapat diletakkan sebelum kata ganti “ones” ketika maknanya  sudah dijelaskan pada teks sebelumnya).

1. We don’t want those magazines, we need other ones. (= different magazines)
2. A: You can borrow my history books if you want.
3. B: Thanks, but I need other ones. (= other history books)

Catatan: kita bisa mengatakan other one ketika ia merujuk pada keinginan untuk mendapat alternatif yang lainnya.

I don't want this one, I want the other one.

4. Others as a pronoun

Others menggantikan " other ones" atau " other + plural noun ".

1. I don’t like these articles. Let’s ask for others. (others = other articles)
2. Some of the participants arrived on Friday. Others arrived the next day.

Catatan: Hanya others dapat digunakan sebagai kata ganti, bukan other.

5. Others VS the Others

Often “(the) others” refers to “(the) other people”.

1. Billy has no interest in helping others. (= in helping other people)
2. What are the others planning tonight?

Other diikuti oleh kata benda jamak atau kata ganti)

Others adalah kata ganti dan tidak diikuti oleh kata benda)
The others adalah kata ganti yang merujuk pada kata benda plural tertentu (yang sudah diketahui)

1. These trousers are too small. Do you have any other trousers?
2. These trousers are too small. Do you have any others? (tidak diikuti kata kerja setelah others dan saya belum tahu / tidak menentukan trousers mana yang ingin saya lihat)
3. I have twenty classmates. Fifteen of them are from Jakarta and the others are from Lampung. (the others = 5 orang teman saya yang berasal dari Lampung yang sudah pembicara ketahui / merujuk pada kata benda tertentu)

6. Other VS the Other

Other diikuti oleh kata benda jamak atau kata ganti)

The other diikuti oleh kata benda jamak (tertentu / sudah diketahui) atau kata ganti benda tunggal yang bermakna (satu yang terakhir)

1. These trousers are too small. Do you have any other trousers?
2. I have twenty students. Fifteen of them are from Jakarta and the other students are from Lampung. (the others = 5 orang murid saya yang berasal dari Lampung yang sudah pembicara ketahui / merujuk pada kata benda tertentu)
3. I have two sisters. one of them is in Jakarta and the other is in Medan.
